Ryan Weiss is Michigan-based artist living and working in metro-Detroit. He earned a BFA in Traditional Illustration from Kendall College of Art an Design in 2007.

Weiss has been exhibiting work since 2006. His early work, more intuitive and paint forward, explored ideas around dreams, social commentaries, found objects, nature and the ethereal - themes that continue to inform his practice today. Over time, his focus has evolved toward using natural materials as a way to reflect on the connection between the human experience and the larger systems of the natural world.

In 2018, Weiss founded “loamworks” as an extension of this exploration, initially creating small-scale, easily accessible, three-dimensional landscapes primarily using locally sourced materials. This work has since expanded into larger, more immersive pieces that emphasize perception, material transformation, and the relationship between the viewer and their environment.

His process is slow and intentional, grounded in the collection and careful arrangement of natural elements. He finds inspiration through both scientific ideas and philosophical inquiry - things like reincarnation, the scientific law of conservation of mass, Cymatics, science fiction, quantuum physics, the Gateway Tapes, Telepathy Tapes, mychorrhizal networks, The Hidden Life of Trees - influence his work. His work invites quiet reflection on the similarities shared between human life and natural processes.

Weiss‘s exhibition history includes solo shows Dreaming Through Reincarnation at the former Biddle Gallery in Wyandotte, MI (2007) and You, Me and Equity Make Three at the Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, CA (2009). His work has also been commissioned by Verizon Wireless and is included in the permanent collections of the Detroit Metropolitan YMCA and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, MI.

Weiss creates work that encourages viewers to slow down, observe more closely, and consider their connections within the natural world.
